Technical

Technical

MailMarshal Exchange uses an Agent which plugs into the Exchange Server message queue. The MailMarshal Exchange Agent retrieves messages from the Exchange queue before they reach the Exchange message store. These messages are then processed by the MailMarshal Exchange Engine which applies deep content inspection and enforces your policies. Messages that breach policy are then removed from the processing queue and are typically placed into the MailMarshal Quarantine folder. Messages which pass inspection are reinserted into the Exchange Message queue.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Mail Marshal Email Content Manager (ECM) a new product? The name doesn't sound familiar.

This is v7 of what was formerly called M86 MailMarshal Exchange. We changed the name to be more representative of the value and functionality of the product (i.e. it addresses content management) instead of highlighting a feature (i.e. it runs on MS Exchange).

Why are we releasing this update?

In response to customer/prospect input that the product should work with MS Exchange 2010. We have also had several requests for enterprise-friendly features such as easy scalability and centralized management and reporting.

What are the main benefits of M86 MailMarshal ECM?

The main benefit of M86 MailMarshal ECM is the ability to have full visibility into internal email—inbound, outbound and between users on the same network. Scanning internal email is essential for any organization that needs to satisfy email regulatory requirements or that wants to establish and enforce a strong email AUP. Simply scanning inbound and outbound email means that an organization has no visibility into the volume of email that originates and stays within the network (between users on the same network). Scanning internal email helps address key business-related issues, including:

  • Ensuring regulatory compliance
  • Protecting employees from offensive, illicit, illegal or pornographic material
  • Increasing productivity
  • Preventing bullying and discrimination
  • Controlling internal data security and preventing dissemination of sensitive information

What versions of Microsoft Exchange does M86 MailMarshal ECM support?

M86 MailMarshal ECM supports Microsoft Exchange 2007 and 2010. Microsoft substantially changed Exchange after Exchange 2003, and as such, earlier versions of Microsoft Exchange will not be supported.

Does M86 MailMarshal ECM scale to meet enterprise requirements?

Yes. M86 MailMarshal ECM now has the array/node architecture that fully supports Microsoft's high availability architecture. M86 MailMarshal ECM runs as a Hub Transport Agent that is installed onto an MS Exchange Hub Transport Server. Scalability is achieved by adding more Hub Transport Servers. M86 MailMarshal ECM is simply installed on each additional Hub Transport server and added to the array for centralized management.

Does M86 MailMarshal ECM support clustering?

Microsoft itself no longer supports clustering at the Exchange Transport Hub level. Their recommended approach for high-availability and scalability is to add additional Hub Transport servers. M86 MailMarshal ECM fully supports this approach. Customers can simply install M86 MailMarshal ECM onto each additional Hub Transport Server and add that server to the centrally-managed array. See the following articles for a detailed description of how load balancing and high availability are achieved in Microsoft Exchange:

What's new in M86 MailMarshal ECM?

  • Support for Microsoft Exchange 2010
  • Array/node architecture for enterprise-class scalability and centralized management and reporting
  • All the most useful features found in the gateway-level M86 MailMarshal solution, called M86 MailMarshal Secure Email Gateway (formerly M86 MailMarshal SMTP):
    • Newer look and feel
    • Console dashboard
    • Improved console message viewer
    • Improved message search interface
    • Custom file types
    • Zero-day threat updates
    • Message digests
    • Quarantine management website w/ user self-release
    • Web console website
    • Database log queuing
How does M86 MailMarshal ECM differ from the M86 MailMarshal SEG (mentioned above)?

M86 MailMarshal ECM is not intended to be an organization's primary, Internet-facing email gateway. That is the function of the M86 MailMarshal Secure Email Gateway (SEG). M86 MailMarshal ECM does not sit at the gateway, and as a result, cannot do gateway-level security tasks such as reputation filtering or Denial of Service (DoS) prevention. While M86 MailMarshal ECM does provide MS Exchange-level security functionality to complement what's already available in MS Exchange, its primary functionality is to simplify compliance. MM ECM contains the following compliance- and security-related functionality:

    • Visibility into all internal email (traffic between users on the same network), including deep packet inspection for attachments
    • Blended threats detection

The M86 MailMarshal Secure Email Gateway (SEG) is located at the gateway and provides the following gateway-level security functions:

    • Spam detection
    • Blended threats detection
    • Detection of spoofed messages
    • Protection against directory harvest and denial of service attacks
    • TLS encryption enforcement
    • Advanced message routing
    • End-user blocklists or safelists

Does a customer need both M86 MailMarshal ECM and M86 MailMarshal SEG?

Complete email security/compliance will include a gateway-level and an Exchange-level solution. Having one in place does not negate the need for the other. M86 MailMarshal ECM is compatible with M86 MailMarshal SEG, but it is designed to run alongside any SMTP gateway product or cloud-based email security offering. If there is a need to scan all email (inbound, outbound and internal), then M86 MailMarshal ECM is necessary.

Can M86 MailMarshal ECM generate reports?

Yes. M86 MailMarshal ECM integrates with the M86 Marshal Reporting Console, which is included as part of the license, and allows users a wide variety of scheduling, depth of information and other customization options.

What markets benefit from M86 MailMarshal ECM?

Markets that need this solution most are subject to industry or legislative regulations, including

    • Finance
    • Healthcare
    • Public sector/federal government/ state and local government
    • Retail
    • Manufacturing
