Google has launched an enterprise class email archiving service, Google Message Discovery. The Google Message Discovery service is powered by Postini which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Google. Postini has received recognition from Gartner Group, Information Security Magazine, PC Magazine and Frost and Sullivan as the best Outsourced Managed Email Service.

The annual cost of the service starts from just £12.50 per user as a fully managed service for both external and internal email and provides comprehensive search and audit facilities. This includes unlimited storage for a year's worth of message-data retention. Retention periods can be increased up to 10 years at additional cost. 

The service also includes full email security as well: anti-spam, anti-virus and content and attachment management, with a comprehensive administration console allowing full policy control and fine granularity through a web console.

Inbound and Outbound external email archiving:

Google Message Discovery supports any email server configuration for inbound and for outbound requires that the mail-server supports smart-hosting routing of outbound email to Postini.

Intra-domain or internal email archiving:

Google Message Discovery requires that the customer mail-server supports "envelope journaling", supported configurations include:

• Microsoft Exchange Server 2000, Standard or Enterprise Edition:

  •Service Pack 3
  •Exchange 2000 hotfix for envelope journaling (870540)
  •E-Mail Journaling Advanced Configuration tool (exejcfg.exe)
  •Standard Edition requires a second server for journaling

• Microsoft Exchange Server 2003, Standard or Enterprise Edition:
  •Service Pack 1
  •E-Mail Journaling Advanced Configuration tool (exejcfg.exe)
  •Standard Edition requires a second server for journaling
• Microsoft Small Business Server with Exchange Server 2000 or 2003 Standard Edition (see requirements noted above)
