Jalasoft Network Monitoring for MOM 2005

jalasoft

Jalasoft's Xian 2005 Network Manager is a comprehensive systems management solution-set designed from the ground-up to extend the robust capabilities of MOM to a heterogeneous computing environment.

Overview

Xian Network Manager is not just another MOM "management pack" or add-on. Xian is an integrated solution that extends the extensive knowledge-based monitoring and management capabilities of MOM to the other critical components of your computing infrastructure. The unique combination of MOM/Xian allows you to manage your Microsoft infrastructure components and your networking and security devices, Unix servers, Unix-based services, uninterruptible power supplies, printers, and print servers all from the same MOM Management Console. The seamless integration of MOM/Xian enables the proactive management of your enterprise-computing environment.

The following Smart Management Packs (SMPs) are currently available for Xian Network Manager:

  • Smart Management Pack for Cisco Routers
  • Smart Management Pack for Cisco Switches
  • Smart Management Pack for Cisco PIX Firewalls
  • Smart Management Pack for Cisco VPN Concentrators
  • Smart Management Pack for F5 Big IP
  • Smart Management Pack for APC UPS
  • Smart Management Pack for HP Procurve Switches

Technical Features

Jalasoft Xian 2005 Network Manager is a scalable and comprehensive enterprise network monitoring solution, designed to monitor performance, availability and reliability on the most common SNMP-based network devices, also extends the management infrastructure of Microsoft Operations Manager providing a set of Smart Management Packs (SMPs) delivering increased reliability, availability, and performance in enterprise-scale network environments.

Jalasoft Architecture for MOM

The schema above represents the Xian 2005 Network Manager architecture and how it is integrated with Microsoft Operations Manager 2005 environment. Blue components belong to Xian 2005, while green components belong to MOM 2005.

Architecture

Network Manager Server (NMS) Monitors managed devices and collects critical information by applying device-aware data collection rules. Each NMS can actively monitor up to 50 individual devices in near real-time.

Network Scan Server (NSS) Scans the entire network on a scheduled basis and, based on pre-defined rules, adds new supported devices to Xian, and to MOM.

Data Server (DS) Receives all gathered device data, including performance metrics and alerts, from NMS and forwards this information to the Xian Connector for MOM 2005.

Xian Database Stores information about the installed Xian configuration, including device rules, connectors, active rules, and other relevant information.

Xian Connector for MOM 2005 Relays performance and "health" data for monitored devices to the MOM Connector Framework (MCF), and the MOM Data Access Server (DAS).

Alerts generated and performance data collected from the monitored devices are sent from the NMS to the DS, these data and the pertinent information about the monitored devices are sent by the DS to the Xian Connector for MOM 2005. The information received by Xian Connector is used to create datasets to be transferred to the MOM 2005 Connector Framework (MCF) and the MOM Data Access Server (DAS) and then to the MOM database.

Smart Management Packs Provide the intelligence to organize, process, and analyze the information about monitored devices into the views, computer groups, and reporting capabilities of MOM.

The SMPs, represent monitored network devices as "computers" these computers are grouped into computer groups defined by each SMP, for instance, all monitored Cisco Routers belong to the computer group "Cisco Routers" additionally their attribute domain is set to "Cisco Routers".

Configuration A Xian 2005 Network Manager Server deployment typically includes one to five Xian Network Manager Server components (NMS), one Xian Network Scan Server (NSS), one Xian Data Server (DS), one Xian Database (Xian DB), a Xian Connector for MOM 2005, the Smart Management Pack for Xian 2005 and the proper SMPs for the monitored devices. Additionally the Xian Console (not in the schema) is required. Optionally the Xian Web Service component may be installed (not in the schema).
